One of my floors had old quarry tiles laid on bare earth, most of these tiles were cracked and the floor was very uneven in places. I have now dug down to aprox 30cm on one side of the room and 25cm on the other (due to not wanting to dig below the wall foundations) The earth i dug out was clay which was not water logged but sliced fairly easily with a few jumps on the spade.
